Basic Aquarium Equipment, What You Really Need And Nothing More

Basic Aquarium Equipment, What You Really Need And Nothing More

Caring for fish requires a decent amount of equipment and sometimes large amount of equipment depending on the particular Aquarium setup you are interested in having. Regardless of what kind of tank you intend to have there are certain basic supplies that are absolutely necessary to keeping your fish happy and healthy.

Basic Aquarium Equipment You Need:

An Aquarium Of The Proper Size
An Air Or Water Circulation Pump
Proper Filtration System
Gravel Or Other Substrate
Water Heater
Aquarium Lighting

The first thing you must decide is exactly what size, shape, and material aquarium to purchase. Smaller is obviously less expensive but be careful not to overcrowd a small tank, a common estimate is about 1 inch of fish per gallon. A larger tank will also require a dedicated stand which while being more expensive adds to the overall appeal of the tank.

Choosing unusual shaped or styled aquariums is strictly a personal preference. The creative shapes can give good visual appeal but most often cost more and occasionally inhibit the use of certain equipment you might want in the future.

Next you will need some sort of water or air pump. Fish need good oxygen and this is created by motion within the water. A simply air pump blowing tiny bubbles is sufficient for fish only tanks but other more particular species may need the added circulation from a more powerful pump.

An aquarium heater is of the utmost importance. If you intend to keep any fish or invertebrates that live in a tropical environment your aquarium needs to be kept at a temperature between 74 – 80 degrees.

Filtration is essential to keep the water clean. The methods of biological and mechanical filtration are endless but trickle filters that hang on the tanks back are sufficient for most setups, if you want a little more filtration there are endless options including canister filters.

Substrate actually isn’t a necessity, however it does add extra biological filtration as well as a much more pleasing view than a plain glass bottom. For the fish only freshwater aquarium any type of clean gravel that you find most aesthetically pleasing is sufficient.

If you intent to keep fish only, lighting is also not a necessity, but you will probably find you want it. Simple basic florescent lights are more than enough if fish are your only interest. If you intend to keep plants or corals or any other photosynthetic animal you will need much more high quality intense lighting that such as T5 lights or metal halides which will run a very high price.

This is by no means an exhausted list. There are countless supplies and methods aquarists use to test, filter, and otherwise properly care for there aquatic life. Particularly if you intent to house some of the more difficult species you find in saltwater or planted aquariums. Please research each animal before you get it to ensure it gets the care it needs.

How to Setup Saltwater Fish Tank

How to Setup Saltwater Fish Tank

Saltwater aquarium known as well as marine aquarium, this type of tank is more expensive andmore demanding then a freshwater aquarium but with a little help and with the right guide you can setup your own saltwater tank, I believe that if you have the suitable equipment itwill help you to avoid future problems. Equipment list: 1- Aquarium- as much as the tank is bigger it will by easy tomaintain it, in small tanks any water parameters changes or drop in temperature will lead to disaster wile large tanks are more tolerating, in this type of tank (saltwater) as the tank go bigger the expenses are more significant. 2- Aquarium gravel- substrate such as crashed corals is ideal for saltwater tank. 3- rocks- high quality rocks are essential, as the hobby develop we can see more and more fish keepers using live rock. 4- Saltwater mix. 5- Hydrometer or refractometer- in order to check and monitoring your salinity you should use hydrometer or refractometer, refractometer is very accurate wile the hydrometer use to fake, to my opinion purchase refractometer will be the smart move, you don’t want your tank to crush because your hydrometer fakes. 6- Heater. 7- Protein skimmer-don’t cheap on this equipment, the protein skimmer is one of the most important and essential equipment in saltwater aquarium. 8- Powerheads and wave box. 9- Sump- to my opinion working with a sump is the right thing to do in saltwater aquarium,it is easy to maintain, media capacity are huge and you can store the hearer,Powerheads and other equipment in it. 10- Replacement media such as filter floss, crushed rocks and activated carbon. 11- Aquarium vacuum, fish net, aquarium scraper, 2-3 five gallon clean buckets, aquarium thermometer. 12- Saltwater fish food. 13- Saltwater test kits- in order to test and to monitor your water parameters you will need test kits such as Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Alkalinity 14- Quarantine Tank. 15- Reverse Osmosis.

First thing before entering the hobby is the need to understand that fish are animals just like a cat or a dog and responsibility comes along, responsibility expressed by the need to perform water changes, feeding the fish on daily basis, monitor water condition end even to spend some money on them (fish food, media, medicine), in saltwater aquarium expenses are something you cant ignore, recommended to know this before you start your aquarium setup. Before you purchase an aquarium you should do your homework and make your self list of fish that you want, if you will know what kind of fish you want it will be easy to match a tank, sump and equipment. Purchasing equipment should be done slowly with a lot of homework, make sure to buy appropriate equipment at the beginning instead of purchasing something you will regret on later and then you will be need to replace it.

After deciding what equipment you will need and after you decide what size tank you will need it is time to think where to place it, you should place it away from windows because you don’t want temperatures and light affect your tank, sunlight that enters the room can cause to algae problems and affect the temperatures, it will be smart to avoid it. It is also recommended to place your tank on a massive stand that will be able to hold the tank weight, to know your total tank weight you just need to multiply gallon tank 10 times, for example 100 gallon tank will weight 1000 pounds ( including water), To this calculation add your rocks total weight. Wash out your tank (and your sump) with water only, using chemicals or soap can poison your tank, same thing with your gravel, be sure to wash it with water only in order to remove dirt, do the same with the rocks, If you have live rocks don’t wash them at all, after wash put gravel and rocks in a bucket, you will need them later on. If you want painting the back glass tank this is the time to do so, blue and black are common paints that give the tank illusion of depth and highlight fish colors, after painting let the tank to sit for 1-2 days to allow the paint to dry. When the aquarium is dry you can place it on the stand, now you should hook up your sump to the main tank. Install your heater, protein skimmer (if he is not external), and other equipment you have in the sump, don’t plug the equipment yet just place it.

Now it will be a good time to fill your tank with reverse osmosis, be patient the process take time, while the tank fills with water you can add the salt wile monitoring water salinity with the hydrometer or refractometer, hook up your wave box in order to mix the salt, after the tank is half full with water (stop water at this point) test your salinity again till you have got specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.024, make sure that all the salt mix have dissolve before you make your last salinity test, let the water “run” for at least 2 days. High quality rocks are essential in order to built prosperous bacteria colony, some use live rocks wile some prefer dry rocks. To my opinion in this type of tank (marine) you can save some money and purchase dry rocks. Now you can add your substance (crushed corals) and then and place your rocks in the tank. Before adding any fish you have to wait your tank to be cycled, this process can take several weeks, in this period of time you need to monitor your aquarium water with your test kits, check your PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and Carbonate hardness levels, also check your water salinity, this are the parameters that you will need to keep: Temperature: 24-27c (75-85F).Ph- 8- 8.4.Salinity – 1.020-1.024. Ammonia: 0. Nitrite:0. Nitrate- 10 ppm or less. Carbonate hardness: 7-10 DKH.

After your tank has cycled you should pass water to your quarantine tank and operate equipment, when your quarantine ready it is time to purchase your first marine fish, in order to acclimate the fish dump the bag into a clean bucket and then add about 1 cup of aquarium water to the bucket every 10 minutes, continue to add 1 cup of aquarium water to the bucket every 10 minutes, do this acclimation process for an hour at least, then take the fish net and carefully introduce the fish to its new home (quarantine tank), in the first day there is no need to feed the fish, month pass by and it is time to move the fish to the main tank, acclimate the fish carefully for at least half hour. Do the same process with every new fish that you are going to purchase. Now, it is time to lay down and enjoy your fish tank, but never forget if you want your tank to look good as it looks right now you have to work for it by monitor the salinity, temperature and water parameters. Change your tank water one time a month, exchange of 15%-20% will be great, don’t forget to replace media and to clean your protein skimmer as well.

If you will do so, enjoyment guaranteed…..

Tips On Feeding Your Aquarium Fish

Tips On Feeding Your Aquarium Fish

I have already talked about selecting great fish and how to transport them home and settle them in to there new surroundings. Today I’m going to tell you about the correct way to feed your aquarium fish because it is one of the most important factors of keeping tropical fish.

Overfeeding aquarium fish is the most common cause of death in tropical fish. I know this may be difficult to believe that something so easy could cause more problems and deaths of your aquarium fish than disease but overfeeding causes problems with water quality which is where problems seem to start. It is often not seen as important and therefore, notice is not taken.

You need to make sure you don’t give your aquarium fish too much food. Just a sprinkle should do however you do need to make sure you don’t underfeed them and cause stunted growth. Here are a few tips on how you should feed your new tropical fish.

1, Try to feed often but sparingly. This will decrease the uneaten food that will turn into ammonia that could be harmful to your aquarium and even kill your fish.

2, Observe your fish at feeding times and look out for how much they can eat within three to five minutes. You should then feed no more than that. This again will create less waste food.

3, Try feeding other foods that don’t pollute the aquarium water as much. Only feed meaty foods twice or three times a week as these tend to create the most ammonia.

4, Look into buying a more powerful filter or even a second filter. If you overfeed then, the extra waste won’t cause a strain on your existing filter. You could also do more water changes to keep ammonia levels down.

5, Buy some catfish or pleco’s. These bottom feeders eat the waste food that is missed by the other fish and will decrease the end waste. Pleco’s also eat algae and keep the tank glass cleaner.

Please look into using a few of these techniques above to try and avoid overfeeding and water quality problems caused by food. If you do use them then I’m sure you will see an improvement in your results and less fish deaths if you’re having problems with ammonia and nitrate levels in your tank water caused by overfeeding.

Saltwater Aquarium Equipments

Saltwater Aquarium Equipments

A saltwater aquarium is a great stress reliever. Saltwater aquariums are colorful and beautiful because of the fishes, live corals, crustaceans, mammals, and anemones.

An aquarium setup can be considered a small ecosystem inside your home. It is very relaxing to watch the setup, complete with beautiful fishes swimming before your eyes.

Saltwater aquarium is a setup resembling marine life under the sea. It is more difficult to maintain than fresh water because saltwater fishes are more delicate. It requires a basic knowledge of their nature and natural habitat to keep them healthy in your own tank.

More and more people are drawn to this setup because saltwater aquarium is more colorful and has a greater variety of fishes, corals and other marine living things.

To keep the exotic marine species safe in the saltwater aquarium, you need to use a combination of filters such as mechanical, biological and chemical types to keep the environment healthy and safe for the marine water bodies. Filters also maintain a low level of soluble waste in the tank.

There are numerous filtration systems available in the market, making it easy to take care of these saltwater aquariums. Some of these are the protein skimmer, biological filters, canister filters, under gravel filters, wet and dry trickle filters. You can also add foam and sponge filters and various filtration units like live sand filtration, carbon filtration, live rock filtration and so much more.

Several advanced and skilled aquarists keep octopuses and squids. Others put shrimps, crabs and shells also. In any saltwater setup, the key is to resemble marine life underwater.

You will need some basic equipment to start your setup. One is the power head. It is a small pump attached inside the tank and below the water surface. The power head pulls the water in and expels it back under high-pressure to create turbulence in the waters. For marine fishes, constant water movement is very necessary, just like in their natural habitats. Also, water movement brings food to them. Power head is also important for oxygenation.

In a large tank having numerous corals, it is great to use two power heads situated on separate ends of the tank. You might want to get a wave maker. It will be helpful in producing water motions similar to the sea so that the marine life will easily adapt to your tank.

Also get hydrometers. It measures water salinity in the tank measured in specific gravity. It is also attached inside the wall of the tank. Keeping the right amount of salt in the tank is important to keep the fishes and other marine life alive and healthy.

Use a chiller is to cool the water, especially in summer. Marine fishes live in cold water.

Lighting is also necessary for your setup. For fish only or fish with live rock tanks, a fluorescent light that is pre-installed in the lid or hood are suitable. For mini reef tanks with anemones and corals, install a stronger light. For your reef tank, it is best to purchase a tank canopy kit that houses 3 to 4 very high output or power compact fluorescent tubes.

- Aquarium fish usually start experiencing stress starting from the time it’s about living the breeding farm till when the end purchaser finally picked it from retailer. Most beginners don’t really know how to handle fish.

- The quality of water is another cause of aquarium fish stress. Different fish species have different water quality that will make the environment conducive for them. Quality parameters like pH, water hardness, high nitrite and carbon dioxide level, low dissolved oxygen salinity of water, water temperature and others.

- Any change in environment like physical damage, leaches, lice and introduction of new fish that is not quarantine could lead to stress in aquarium, thus making life non conducive for fish in aquarium tank

- Change in weather condition is another factor that leads to aquarium fish stress. When there is heavy downfall as you know the weather will become cold and this could lead to stress in aquarium.
